Annual Tire Drop Off May 3-4 in Joplin

The Annual Tire Drop-Off Event will be on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street.

Automotive passenger tires, with or without rims will be accepted at no charge from Joplin residents, Joplin residential landlords, and Liberty Utilities-Empire District residential electric customers. There is a ten tire per household limit. Commercial, farm, large truck, and racing tires will not be accepted. This event is funded by Liberty Utilities-Empire District and the City of Joplin as a community service.

To conserve landfill space and keep hazardous materials from landfills, whole tires were banned from Kansas and Missouri landfills in the 1990s.

If residents need further assistance throughout the year with tire disposal or a commercial tire business needs help contracting with a tire disposal company, they may contact Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator 417-624-0820 extension 501.

Most of the tires will be hauled to a processor, where the tires will be shredded, then sold to make different products. Uses for tires can be in the manufacturing of playground cover, garden hoses, loading dock bumpers, parking lot wheel stops, road paving aggregate, landscape edging and much more.

For more information, contact Mary Anne Phillips, City of Joplin Recycling Coordinator at 417-624-0820 extension 501, or the City’s web site.
