Sears Is Shrinking

Sears is shrinking.

The embattled department store chain is hoping to still be a shopping destination, announcing Thursday that they will open three small-sized stores, called “Sears Home & Life,” in May. They’ll have locations in Alaska, Louisiana, and Overland Park, Kansas after closing hundreds of stores across the country, and filing for bankruptcy protection in October. The stores will range in size from 10,000 sq. ft. to 15,000 sq. ft. while the average Sears store is about 100,000 square feet.

Sears will ditch the clothing department and focus on major appliances, small kitchen appliances, mattresses; and connected home products like Alexa and Google +. The new format will also feature a Service area for appliance repair, and will have experts on hand for consultations on home improvement needs such as windows, roofing, cabinets, countertops, and flooring.
