“Art on the Move” comes to Lamar in April

The University of Missouri “Art on the Move” outreach program comes to Lamar on April 10 when Jo Stealey, director of the MU School of Visual Studies, meets with local students and teachers to share stories of outstanding students and alumni, their art, their educational path at Mizzou and formative art careers.

Stealey is a nationally known artist working in mixed-media sculptures and collages using handmade paper. She will meet with students from Lamar High School, Lamar Career and Technical Center, and other area schools, including Dadeville, Golden City, Greenfield, Jasper, Liberal, Lockwood, Sheldon and Stockton.

In addition, an exhibition of artworks by MU alumna Samantha Edwards will be on display April 10 at the library at Lamar High School, 503 Maple St., Lamar. Edwards, an emerging children’s book illustrator and author, received a BFA with an emphasis in drawing from MU and a master’s in library and information sciences from San Jose State University.

Established in 2017, the MU School of Visual Studies merges four disciplines: art, art history, film studies and digital storytelling. The program aims to graduate future generations of outstanding critical thinkers, inventive problem solvers and makers of conscientious, well-crafted art.

The School of Visual Studies (SVS) brings the academic resources of the University to Missouri to communities through collaborative engagements such as the Art on the Move outreach program in which SVS students and alumni share their art with people across the state. Art on the Move provides hands-on professional career-building opportunities for SVS students and alumni, and plays an instrumental part in recruiting the next generation of SVS students.
