Spirit Tree Sculpture Could Soon Come To Joplin

A sculpture of the Spirit Tree could soon be coming to Joplin. You’ll remember the dead tree was left standing in the aftermath of the 2011 tornado, and was painted in bright colors a year later as a symbol of hope. Earlier this year, the tree, which was virtually hidden by the 20th Street viaduct, fell. Now a local group would like to have a metal sculpture of the tree built to be placed at the corner of 20th and Murphy Blvd. It’s estimated that the Spirit Tree sculpture will cost about $100,000 and will be funded through private donations only. There is no set timeline for the project to be completed. The Joplin Parks and Rec Department will ask the soon ask the City Council for permission to place the sculpture in that space.
