Joplin Man Arrested After Weekend Burglary

29-year-old James Gautney is in custody for one count of receiving stolen property.

A Joplin man is being held on $50,000 bond after Joplin Police say he trespassed and burglarized a home. Around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Joplin Police were called to the 1700 block of South Byers after a witness saw a male attempting to go into several homes and who was also looking in windows. Witnesses provided officers with pictures of the suspect, in which then they recognized the man with whom they had contacted earlier in the day for suspicious activity that had not raised the level of concern to make an arrest at that time.

Then on Sunday morning around 9, officers saw the man at 14th and Pearl and arrested him for trespassing for Saturday’s incident. Captain Trevor Duncan has more details. “A few hours later, a little after noon, one of our officers responded to the 400 block of North Byers for a burglary that had occurred at a residence there. The suspect that was arrested a few hours earlier had stolen property in his possession that was taken from the burglary that was now being reported.”

29-year-old James Gautney is in custody and Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office has filed for one count of receiving stolen property. The police continue to investigate and further charges will be considered.
