Two people from Fort Scott were arrested after a man reported a stolen trailer that he identified as his own. Shortly after midnight on Friday, Joseph Merando, of Arma, Kansas, was following a truck pulling a trailer that he recognized to be his after a trailer went missing from his residence.
Crawford County Sheriff Dan Peak tells Newstalk KZRG that a deputy spotted the truck just west of Arcadia as the vehicle was unable to negotiate a curve and entered a field. Two people fled the truck on foot and entered a creek. Passenger 21-year-old Maddison Hendricks was taken into custody on the embankment on possession of stolen property and felony obstruction. The driver, 26-year-old Austin Arnold, was able to cross the creek and avoid detection in a wooded area before being located and taken into custody later that morning. He was arrested on possession of stolen property, felony obstruction, theft of property and attempt to elude law enforcement.
Both were taken to the Crawford County Jail where they later posted their $3,000 bond and were released. The stolen trailer was then returned to Merando. Further investigation is being conducted by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
